IN MILWAUKEE WE HAVE ABOUT 75 MOBILES AND ABOUT 50 BASE STATIONS ALL ON 146.67MCS WIDEBAND FM. THIS NET WAS STARTED ON BEHALF OF THE. MILWAUKEE/WAUKESHA CHAPTER OF THE RED CROSS BUT IS AVAILABLE TO ANY AND ALL IN NEED OF OUR SERVICES. THE USUAL LOCAL NET CONTROL STATION W9EKW (A SECOND STATION LICENSED TO NOULK) AND IS LOCATED AT THE RED CROSS MILWAUKEE OFFICE. IN ADDITION THE LOCAL CHAPTER HAS A BASE (KIY-335) AND 4 MOBILES ON THE NATIONAL CLEAR CHANNEL OF 47.420MCS. TWO OF THE MOBILES ARE IN THE CHAPTERS DISASTER SURVEY STATION WAGONS AND TWO ARE IN AMATEUR CARS.

ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO THE STAFF DISASTER SERVICE DIRECTOR CAME TO THE THEN CHAIRMAN OF THE COMMUNICATION SUBCOMMITTEE (WHO WAS ALSO THE COUNTY AMATEUR EMERGENCY COORDINATOR) AND ASKED FOR THE NAMES OF 50 HAMS WHO COULD BE CALLED OUT ON A MOMENTS NOTICE. THE THEORY BEING THAT IF YOU CALL 50 YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET 10. NOTHING CAME OF THE REQUEST AND THE THEN CHAIRMAN GAVE UP HIS DUTIES. AS CHAIRMAN AND COUNTY E.C. I BECAME EC. AND ASST CHAIRMAN AND W9ZPV WHO IS NOW WAUKESHA COUNTY E.C. BECAME CHAIRMAN. SINCE THEN I HAVE BECOME THE CHAIRMAN. DICK W9ZPV AND I INFORMED THE CHAPTER THAT IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET 50 HAMS -- LET ALONE 5 -- ON ANY GIVEN NETTED FREQUENCY AND A PLAN WAS WORKED OUT WHEREBY THE CHAPTER BUDGETED 1500 DOLLARS FOR EACH OF 2 YEARS TO PURCHASE EQUIPMENT AND SET UP A NET. IN THOSE DAYS C.D. WAS OPERATIONAL BUT NOT RELIABLE. TODAY C.D. IS NEITHER SO WE CHOSE A NON-RACES FREQUENCY WHICH ALREADY ENJOYED SOME USE AROUND MILWAUKEE -- 146.670MCS.

IN ESTABLISHING A NEW 10 MEMBER COMMUNICATIONS SUBCOMMITTEE WE HAD A FREE HAND AND ALL MEMBERS ARE HAMS AND REPRESENT VARIOUS GROUPS, CLUBS AND MODES. THE CHAPTER ALREADY HAD KIY335 AND 2 MOBILES ON 47.42MCS AND WE HAD TO SELL THEM ON THE IDEA THAT WE COULD GIVE THEM AN EXTRA CHANNEL DURING DISASTERS.

WE PURCHASED A USED GE TAXICAB 60 WATT BASE STATION AND INSTALLED IT ON THE ROOF OF THE CHAPTER IN A WEATHER-PROOF CABINET WITH A 30 FOOT TOWER AND A STACKED COAX ANTENNA.

THE MONEY ALLOTTED TO US WAS SPENT TO BUILD OPERATING POSITIONS IN A BASEMENT ROOM GIVEN TO US AND FOR COAX AND REMOTE CONTROL WIRE RUNS TO THE ROOF. OUR FIRST STEP WAS TO ESTABLISH A LOCAL NET AND WE WENT DIRECTLY TO MOTOROLA IN CHICAGO AND OBTAINED 17 80-D 12VOLT UNITS ON FREO. THESE ARE OWNED BY THE CHAPTER AND LEASED TO INTERESTED HAMS ON A ONE TIME CHARGE OF 20 DOLLARS - REFUNDABLE WHEN THE UNIT IS TURNED 1N IN GOOD CONDITION. AT PRESENT ALL 17 UNITS ARE OUT. AS SOON AS A MEMBER OF THE GROUP OBTAINS A UNIT OF HIS OWN THE LEASED MOBILE IS THEN RE- ISSUED TO ANOTHER HAM ON OUR WAITING LIST. WE ALSO PURCHASED 3 2-FREQ 80-DS CONVERTED TO A.C. AS PORTABLE BASE STATIONS. ONE IS INSTALLED AT W9EKW AS OUR RATT UNIT. THE OTHER TWO ARE SPARE BASES AND ONE OF. THESE IS NOW IN LACROSSE. THROUGH THE CHAPTER AND ON OUR OWN WE HAVE BEEN BUYING MOBILES FROM LOCAL RADIO DISPATCH SERVICES, TAXI COMPANIES, TELEPHONE CO., ETC. AS THESE COMPANIES HAD TO CONVERT TO NARROW-BAND THEY FOUND THAT WE WOULD GIVE THEM MORE MONEY THAN THEY COULD GET IN TRADE ON NEW GEAR. WE HAVE PAID A FLAT 35 DOLLARS FOR; 5-V, 41-V, AND 80-D UNITS AND 25 DOLLARS FOR DELUXE 15-V AND 30-D SETS. WE TRY TO BUY ONLY MOTOROLA AS WE FEEL THAT IT IS THE BEST AND IT MAKES THE MAINTENANCE JOB EASY IF ALL ARE OF THE SAME MFG. HOWEVER, WE DO HAVE SOME GE MOBILES SUCH AS THE ONE USED BY NOTQS/K9ZPP.

THE VICE DIRECTOR FOR THE ARRL CENTRAL DIVISION ED METZGER IS THE NEW TRUSTEE OF W9DUA AT SPRINGFIELD, ILL. AND WE ARE TRYING TO SET UP A RED CROSS DISASTER NET STARTING AT THE MIDWEST AREA OFFICE OF RED CROSS IN ST. LOUIS AND MOVING NORTH THRU ILLINOIS TO MILWAUKEE AND GREEN BAY AND WEST TO MADISON AND THEN BRANCHING TO LACROSSE AND TWINCITIES. THIS IS STILL 1N THE DREAM STAGES BUT WE ARE WORKING ON IT.

BELOW IS A LISTING OF OUR PROPOSAL TO THE RED CROSS. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE CONTACT ME OR JACK NOULP/W9ATK OR BERNIE NOTQS/K9ZPP.
